Mongolia’s Five Great Altai Peaks: Mountains of Culture, Wilderness, and Wildlife
Western Mongolia is home to some of the most dramatic mountain landscapes in Central Asia. The powerful ranges of the Altai rise above glaciers, high alpine valleys, and endless steppe, forming one of the most remote and pristine wilderness regions in the world. For centuries these mountains have shaped the lives, beliefs, and traditions of nomadic communities who live beneath their slopes.
In tourism materials, the phrase “Five Holy Peaks” or Altai Tavan Bogd is often misunderstood. Some sources suggest that the five peaks located next to Khüiten Peak represent the traditional group. In reality, Mongolia’s most prominent high Altai mountains are spread across several regions of western Mongolia rather than existing in one single cluster.
Across the Altai region, five major peaks stand out for their elevation, cultural importance, and natural significance. These mountains are among the most iconic landscapes of Mongolia and are protected within several national parks.

Khüiten Peak – The Roof of Mongolia
The highest mountain in the country is Khüiten Peak, rising to 4,374 meters (14,350 feet) above sea level. It stands within Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, one of Mongolia’s most famous protected areas.
Khüiten Peak overlooks the vast Potanin Glacier, the largest glacier in Mongolia. The mountain sits near the borders of Mongolia, Russia, and China and forms part of a spectacular glaciated massif that attracts trekkers, climbers, and nature enthusiasts from around the world.
Sutai Mountain – The Sacred Ice Giant
Further south in the Altai system stands Sutai Mountain, reaching 4,220 meters (13,850 feet). Sutai rises dramatically from the surrounding landscape and is widely respected as a sacred mountain by local communities.
For generations, many Mongolians believed that the summit should not be climbed because it was the dwelling place of powerful mountain spirits. Even today, the mountain remains an important symbol of cultural heritage and spiritual tradition in western Mongolia.
Mönkhkhairkhan Mountain – The Eternal Holy Mountain
Another magnificent peak is Mönkhkhairkhan Mountain, which reaches 4,204 meters (13,793 feet) and forms the heart of Mönkhkhairkhan National Park.
The name “Mönkhkhairkhan” can be translated as “Eternal Holy Mountain.” For centuries, Kazakh and Mongol nomadic communities have performed rituals and offerings to honor the spirits believed to inhabit the mountain. Today, the park protects glaciers, alpine meadows, and dramatic rocky ridges that remain largely untouched by modern development.
Tsambagarav Mountain – Glacier Crown of Western Mongolia
The impressive Tsambagarav Mountain rises to 4,195 meters (13,763 feet) and dominates the landscape of Tsambagarav National Park.
Tsambagarav is known for its striking twin snow-covered summits and extensive glaciers. The surrounding park features alpine lakes, forests, and rich summer pastures where nomadic families bring their livestock during the warm months.
Its majestic scenery makes Tsambagarav one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in Mongolia.
Takhilt Peak – The Summit of Khukh Serkh
Completing the group of Mongolia’s notable Altai peaks is Takhilt Peak, which rises to 4,019 meters (13,186 feet) in Khukh Serkh National Park.
Takhilt Peak is the highest summit of the Khukh Serkh mountain range and an important ecological area in western Mongolia. The region is characterized by rugged cliffs, high plateaus, and remote valleys that provide ideal habitats for mountain wildlife.
A Sanctuary for Rare and Protected Wildlife
The Altai Mountains of Mongolia are not only famous for their beauty and cultural heritage; they are also one of the most important wildlife refuges in Central Asia. These remote mountain ecosystems provide habitat for many rare and protected species that depend on undisturbed alpine environments.
Among the most iconic animals living in these mountains is the elusive Snow Leopard, one of the world’s most endangered big cats. The steep cliffs and rocky slopes of the Altai provide perfect hunting grounds for this mysterious predator.
The mountains are also home to the Siberian Ibex, a wild goat species famous for its impressive curved horns and ability to climb near-vertical cliffs. Another remarkable species is the Altai Argali, the largest wild sheep in the world, which grazes across the high alpine valleys.
Above these mountains soar powerful birds of prey such as the Golden Eagle, a bird deeply connected with the traditional eagle-hunting culture of western Mongolia.
In addition to these well-known species, the Altai region supports wolves, lynx, marmots, rare alpine birds, and many other animals that depend on the fragile mountain ecosystem.
A Landscape of Sacred Mountains and Living Traditions
For centuries, the mountains of the Mongolian Altai have been respected as sacred guardians of the land. Travelers across these regions often encounter ovoos—traditional stone cairns built on mountain passes and summits where people stop to make offerings and prayers for safe journeys.
Today, protected areas such as Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, Tsambagarav National Park, and Khukh Serkh National Park help preserve these landscapes and their wildlife.
Together, the great peaks of Khüiten, Sutai, Mönkhkhairkhan, Tsambagarav, and Takhilt represent the heart of Mongolia’s Altai Mountains—where towering summits, rare wildlife, and ancient nomadic traditions continue to exist in harmony within one of the world’s last great wilderness regions.
